How Does Hair Grafting Work?

How Does Hair Grafting Work?

The most common form of hair loss, androgenic alopecia, affects some 80 million people in the United States. Hair loss can affect your appearance, self-esteem, and confidence, so it’s understandable that you want solutions.

Advances in aesthetic surgery offered here at Lansdowne Aesthetic Center have made it possible to restore a fuller head of hair through a procedure known as hair grafting, specifically Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Read on to learn how hair grafting works, so you can decide if it’s a treatment you want to pursue to restore your head of hair.

All about hair grafting

Hair grafting, also known as hair transplantation, is a surgical procedure that involves relocating hair follicles from one part of the body – typically the back or sides of the scalp – to the areas experiencing hair thinning or balding.

Hair grafting works because the hair follicles transplanted from the donor site are genetically resistant to hair loss. These transplanted follicles maintain their resistance, even when moved to a different location. This ensures that the new hair continues to grow where you want it to be full and thick.

We find this technique to be highly effective as it offers long-lasting, natural-looking results.

Follicular Unit Extraction method

Here at Lansdowne Aesthetic Center, we use Follicular Unit Extraction. This cutting-edge technique involves extracting individual hair follicles directly from the donor area using a specialized punch tool.

FUE is less invasive than many other methods of grafting, leaving minimal scarring and requiring a shorter recovery period. We carefully place the extracted follicles in the recipient site to create a natural-looking hairline.

The FUE process

FUE begins with a detailed consultation to assess your hair loss pattern, discuss your goals, and create a personalized treatment plan.

On the day of your procedure, we meticulously clean both the donor and recipient areas of your scalp. Our team administers local anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

Our surgical team harvests hair follicles using a specialized tool and then prepares them for transplantation to ensure their viability and survival.

The grafts are carefully placed at the correct angle and density in tiny incisions at the areas designated for grafting. This makes sure your new hair grows in a natural-looking manner.

After the procedure, you’ll receive detailed instructions on how to care for your scalp to promote healing and maximize results.

The results of hair grafting

In the initial week or two following FUE, you may have minor swelling, redness, or scabbing. These effects subside quickly.

You may notice that transplanted hair initially sheds within the first few weeks. This is a normal part of the process called “shock loss.” New hair growth usually begins within three to four months, with noticeable results around six to nine months.

By 12 months, the transplanted hair should appear fully grown and seamlessly blend with your natural hair.

Am I a candidate for hair grafting with FUE?

Hair grafting is ideal if you’re experiencing hair thinning or balding due to genetic factors, such as male or female pattern baldness. However, a consultation with our qualified team can help you determine if you’re a suitable candidate. Men and women can both benefit.

If you’re a man, we can also review other men’s procedures that could enhance your overall look. We offer the expertise of highly skilled surgeons and state-of-the-art technology, ensuring optimal results and a positive experience.
