What to Expect from Your First Dermal Filler Treatment

What to Expect from Your First Dermal Filler Treatment

More than 1 million people take advantage of the beauty-enhancing effects of dermal fillers every year. These injectable cosmetic medications smooth wrinkles and add volume to areas that need a little boost.

If you’ve made a dermal filler appointment here at Lansdowne Aesthetic Center, we want you to know what to expect when you come in for the procedure.

What are dermal fillers anyway?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. We use formulations made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin that helps retain moisture and elasticity.

Before your appointment

Before your actual treatment, you’ll have a consultation with one of our skilled practitioners at which time you’ll talk about your aesthetic goals, review your medical history, and discuss any concerns you have. This is the perfect time to ask questions and understand the options available to you.

A few days before your appointment, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E — all of which can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection sites. Of course, ask your personal medical professional before halting any prescription medications. Hydrate well, too, as well-hydrated skin reacts better to the injections.

During the dermal filler treatment

For the treatment, you’ll settle into a comfortable, private treatment room. A skilled member of our team cleanses the treatment area and applies a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort.

Your injector marks the injection sites on your face to guide the precise placement of the fillers. They use a fine needle to inject the filler into the predetermined areas. You may feel a slight pinch or a bit of pressure, but most tolerate the procedure quite well.

Your entire appointment typically takes between 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.

After your dermal filler treatment

You’ll see immediate effects in the treated areas, but keep in mind that there may be some initial swelling or redness. Such side effects are typically mild and fade over a few days.

For the first 24-48 hours after your treatment, avoid touching or massaging the treated areas. This can cause shifts in the filler application. For this short one to two day period, you should also avoid vigorous exercise and exposure to heat from saunas or hot tubs.

You’ll also want to avoid lying down for at least four hours post-treatment.

Your results last anywhere from six months to two years. This time frame depends on what area was treated, the type of filler used, and your body’s reaction to the filler.

Your first dermal filler application begins your journey toward enhanced beauty and renewed confidence. We want you to know what to expect and how to prepare for this visit so you have a positive, stress-free experience.
